After posting the article yesterday, the wind went up and we cut off the
engine, but now again we are sailing with the motor. As we have run the
engine for a long time, cucumbers in the fridge were frozen. Wasted
three cucumbers.....farewell to precious fresh vegitables.

I read a book written by Kenichi Horie who single handed from
Nishinomiya Japan to San Francisco with 19ft boat when he was 23 years
old. In addition to that journey, he sailed across the Pacific more than
7 times by himself with a 2.8m boat, a solor power boat, a boat made of
recycled whisky casks, etc... and around the world without dropping by
anywhere. (look up him in Wikipedia!)

In the book, he says "A sailing boat is really strong, I'm quite
impressed. I trust in it. Reliable and lovable. I realize acutely that
she is part of myself. I have to do my best for her". When I read it, I
questioned to myself if I really love this boat. Since I am used to live
on 46ft Bengal7 (Ohashi46) with which I sailed across the Pacific in
2011 and which was designed with the consideration that the boat will be
delivered by sea and crew will live on the boat many many days, I
sometimes complain how harder it is to live on 54ft Bengal7 (Humphrys
54). However, I have spent more time with 54ft than 46ft. She has stood
up to hard pitchings and heels and took us from Japan - Sydney-
Wellington- Tahiti-Hawaii, more than 10,000miles safely. I really have
to be thankful to her and take a good care of her.

Mr. Horie had been asked "why did you across the Pacific?" many many
times. He always answered "because I wanted to". Of course people who
asked were not sutisfied with such a vague answer. However, I can
understand him. I sailed across the Pacific because I watned to try it.
Just it.

I sometimes get seasick so bad, get bored often on the boat, and cannot
take shower for weeks. Why did I decide to sail long distance again
after beeing satisfied with the sialing I did two years ago? The answer
is same. I just wanted to sail across the ocean again. There might be
small reasons if I go further. If I were to dare to find a specific
reason, I'd say, "when I am on land, I sometimes feel I am the center
of my life, when I'm in the ocean, I feel I'm a part of the earth. It is
more natural to me." Haha, yes, sounds so affected, but it's true. Also,
from the point of view that I like experiencing different culture and
meeting different people (which means I like travelling), getting into a
country by sea let me feel that I blend in with a culture and people
more naturally than by air.
I'd like to ask Mr. Horie as well why he does trans Pacific and around
the world over again and again.

I'm thinking about celebrating the passing of the same latitude with
Marina del Rey and reaching to 1,000 miles with special lunch. We don't
pass either the equator nor the date line on the way from Hawaii to
California.....no big celebration.
I forgot to write this yesterday. CONGAULATIONS to Samurai Japan! I
wanna go see the games in Brazil in 2014.
